If your brakes have been idle for a while, the lubrication film on the caliper pistons can wear down, resulting in a longer dead-stroke and a softer lever feel. When checking your bite point, it's best to insert a bleed block into the caliper. Using discs and pads can cause distortions in the system, making the feel slightly spongy or softer.
